This Morning Font: A Designer’s Journey Through a Script Typeface for Branding

Opening the Project: A Blank Canvas and a Fresh Font

It was one of those early mornings where the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet, but the ideas are already flowing. I was staring at a blank brand board for a new client—a small, artisanal café looking to launch with a soft, approachable identity. The brief mentioned warmth, elegance, and a hint of playfulness. My first instinct was to reach for a script font, something that could carry personality without shouting. That’s when I opened up my font library and saw it: This Morning.

First Impressions: What Makes This Morning Stand Out

This Morning is a delicate script font that walks the line between casual and refined. It’s not overly ornate like some calligraphy fonts, but it carries a softness and flow that makes it feel hand-drawn. The letterforms have a gentle bounce, with subtle variations in stroke weight that add depth without distraction. It’s clearly designed for visual appeal—especially in branding and social media where legibility meets charm.

As I typed out the café’s name for the first logo draft, I noticed how the lowercase letters connected in a way that felt organic, not forced. There were no sharp edges or dramatic swooshes, just a smooth rhythm that immediately gave the design a human touch. It reminded me of a handwritten note left on a kitchen counter—personal, yet professional.

Logo Design: A Natural Fit for a Soft Brand Identity

For the café’s logo, I wanted something that would feel at home on a menu board, a business card, or a social media post. I started with a clean sans serif for the main brand name and paired it with a script for the tagline. Then I tried switching it up—using This Morning as the primary logo type.

Surprisingly, it worked beautifully. The font’s balance of elegance and approachability made it versatile enough to stand alone. I adjusted the tracking to give it a little more breathing room and used a muted terracotta tone to enhance the warmth. It wasn’t just readable—it felt inviting.

Testing Across Brand Touchpoints: From Packaging to Social Media

Next step: testing the font across different brand elements. I dropped it into a mockup for a takeaway coffee cup label. The rounded letters paired well with the curved shape of the cup, and the font’s light contrast made it easy to read even at small sizes. I was worried it might look too fragile, but it held its own—especially with a simple line art illustration of a coffee bean next to it.

Then I tried it on a homepage hero section. Here, I used it for the headline over a soft linen background. It gave the site a boutique feel without looking outdated. I paired it with a clean serif for body text, which created a nice visual hierarchy and kept the layout from feeling too whimsical.

For Instagram stories, I placed This Morning over a pastel-toned background with a light shadow effect. It looked like a dream—perfect for quotes or short announcements. It’s definitely a strong contender for anyone creating social media graphics with a personal, artisanal vibe.

Practical Uses and Limitations: Where This Font Shines

This Morning works best as a display font. It’s ideal for headlines, logo design, packaging accents, and short-form text. Trying to use it in longer body copy would likely compromise readability, so I’d recommend pairing it with a more structured sans serif or serif for paragraph text.

I also noticed that the font has several ligatures and stylistic alternates, which gave me more flexibility when designing the logo. It supports multiple languages and comes in both OTF and TTF formats, making it usable across different platforms. The commercial license was a relief too—no hidden fees or restrictions for client work.

Font Pairing: Finding the Right Balance

When pairing This Morning with other typefaces, I found it worked best with clean, minimal styles. A soft serif like Merriweather or a modern sans serif like Lato created a nice contrast without competing for attention. I avoided pairing it with another script font, as that would have made the layout feel too busy.

For the café’s packaging, I used This Morning for the brand name and a thin sans serif for the ingredients list. The contrast between the two made the design feel intentional and polished. On printed menus, I used it sparingly for section headers—never for full paragraphs.

Real-World Observations: How This Morning Performs

One of the most telling tests was seeing how the font looked in print. I ordered a sample business card mockup and was pleased with the result. The fine strokes held up well, and the font maintained its character even in small sizes. I also tested it on a shop sign mockup and found that it looked best when used at a larger size with a subtle shadow to help it stand out against a wooden background.

For digital use, I dropped it into a Shopify product page header and noticed how it added a boutique feel without slowing down the load time. It’s not a web font by default, but embedding it via a service like Adobe Fonts worked smoothly.

Final Thoughts: A Versatile Font for Creative Branding

By the time the client presentation rolled around, I felt confident in the direction. This Morning had helped shape the brand’s personality without overpowering it. It was elegant, but not stiff. Friendly, but not childish. The kind of font that says, “I care about the details, but I’m not trying too hard.”

If you’re working on a branding project that needs a soft, approachable script—whether for a café, a skincare line, or a creative studio—this is a font worth testing. It’s versatile enough for packaging, digital design, and print, and expressive enough to help your brand stand out with a personal touch.
